NEXEYE | From sales floor to leader: How nexeye empowers store managers in their leadership role

A tailor-made leadership programme in collaboration with Commerce Training

Nexeye is an optical retail organization specializing in the eyewear industry, with brands such as Hans Anders, eyes + more, and Direkt Optik, and a strong focus on customer-centricity and innovation. They actively invest in strengthening the leadership skills of their store managers to effectively support their teams and provide customers with the best possible experience.

THE CHALLENGE

Store managers at Nexeye often oversee large teams and have typically advanced from the shop floor. Many of these managers needed additional tools and insights to further strengthen their leadership skills. It was important for them that these skills be immediately applicable in their daily work, enabling them to better support and guide their teams.

Thanks to our collaboration with the Commerce Training Academy of Comeos, retail organizations like Nexeye receive subsidies to offer a People Management program that perfectly aligns with the needs of their store managers. The comprehensive four-day leadership program, Leaders for Today & Tomorrow, proved to be a strong foundation. However, to accommodate the limited availability of their store managers, Nexeye asked us to develop a customized two-day program. The goal was to provide their store managers with essential insights and practical tools in communication and feedback.

THE APPROACH

Together with Nexeye, we developed a tailor-made version of the Leaders for Today & Tomorrow program. This two-day training—reinforced with interim Learning Boosters—focused on the core principles of leadership, with a clear emphasis on impactful communication:

  • Day 1: How do I engage my team?
The program began with the role of a leader in driving team engagement and how to use the X-model (balancing individual fulfillment with contributions to organizational goals) to keep employees motivated. Participants explored when communication has impact and learned to adapt their communication style to the needs of their team members. With the help of a simulation actor, they practiced real-life scenarios, making the theory immediately applicable. The day concluded with reflection and a preparatory assignment for Day 2.

  • Day 2: What if things get challenging?
Day 2 started with a recap of Day 1 and a review of the interim assignments. The focus then shifted to strengthening communication through proactive and reactive conversation techniques. Participants discovered why giving feedback can sometimes be difficult and learned how to handle (challenging) responses using recognition, mirroring, and setting boundaries. Practical exercises with a simulation actor allowed them to apply these insights immediately. The day wrapped up with reflection and the creation of concrete action points, supported by a buddy system.

This approach was reinforced with practical tools such as checklists and job aids, designed for use on the job to facilitate the transfer of learning into daily practice.

The Collaboration with Comeos

The two-day leadership program at Nexeye is a great example of the impact of Commerce Training, the sector-specific training offering from Comeos. Thanks to their support, we were able to provide a program that not only met Nexeye’s specific needs but also set an example for other companies in the retail sector. Additionally, the subsidy opportunities through Comeos made it possible to deliver high-impact training without compromising on quality or effectiveness due to budget constraints.

THE IMPACT

The participants from Nexeye left the two-day training with concrete tools they could apply right away. After the program, they felt more confident in their leadership role and equipped with the skills to guide their teams, even in challenging situations. The training not only left a lasting impression on the participants but also had a positive impact on their teams. The skills they acquired and the shared language developed within the company elevated leadership to a higher level, strengthening teamwork, performance, and overall job satisfaction.

Topics to develop a culture of dialogue?

To build a culture of dialogue, developing strong communication skills is essential. This serves as the foundation for organizations to make conversations work effectively. To support organizations in this effort, we deliberately focus on three powerful levers to foster a thriving culture of dialogue: Psychological Safety, Leadership, and a Feedback Culture.
