NIKE is an international organisation whose core purpose is to serve athletes. They are committed to shaping the future of sport and taking people to the next level through innovation. They want to do that not only with their athletes and customers, but also with their internal employees and in this case specifically their managers.
With that question, NIKE came knocking on The Tipping Point’s door to provide their managers with the necessary support in leading their teams.
The challenge was great.
Due to rapid growth and the limited number of training initiatives for managers during the COVID period, the target group craved additional support. Not only was the challenge in the urgency as well as the high number of managers, unfortunately (and quite rightly), there was no time for an extensive multi-day course. Managers had to be inspired and supported as quickly and as well as possible, in a maximum of two days.
Challenging enough for us to get to work with NIKE!
With the needs, challenges and specific context on the table, the design phase could begin. In collaboration, NIKE & The Tipping Point developed the “Coach Conference“. An interactive learning event spread over 2 days, each time for a group of 150 managers. The total population of 450 managers would thus be given the right tools to lead, motivate and inspire their teams over a period of 6 days (3 x 2-day event).
Day 1 took NIKE to task and the coaches were challenged – within the NIKE context – to reflect on their role as leaders. Topics such as fixed & growth mindset, situational leadership and the NIKE specific leadership model were reviewed.
Day 2 was co-lead by The Tipping Point. Over three days, 150 coaches were each thrown into a bath around the ‘art of courageous conversations‘. A kick-off by NIKE, a short powerful inspiration session around courageous conversations, a carousel of 4 different workshops and a joint closure was the set-up. Each manager could attend any workshop, within the carousel. This resulted in 32 workshops per day, in which 12 colleagues from The Tipping Point worked with the NIKE managers.
The focus was on practice which meant that in addition to 8 trainers, 4 professional simulation actors were also used. As a result, the managers not only received tools in the workshops, but could also immediately put them into practice using their own cases.
Not only was a high-impact, high-quality learning event developed in a (relatively) short space of time, which generated the necessary boost and enthusiasm among all managers. Above all, a common language (professional jargon) was created in this way, which also made it easier for the coaches to talk to each other after the sessions.
Each manager was also inspired during the session to really take action and actually use what they had learned in the workplace. A personal action plan, a follow-up with their managers, same language between colleagues,… . This together with the real desire to get going with their teams made it a great success and an appetite for more!
The Coach Conference is Nike’s first two-day leadership training for distribution leaders, aimed at accelerating the growth of our leaders through action learning. Our coaches and distribution managers lead with the mission, “Athletes serving athletes personally.”
Our goal during this learning journey was to equip our 450 leaders with the right tools and experiences to develop the skills needed to excel and grow in their leadership identity, ultimately creating high-performing teams.
To shape the content of this Coach Conference, we partnered with The Tipping Point. At Nike, we strongly believe in teamwork, and this was fully realized in our collaboration with The Tipping Point team. Together, we co-created the right practical and content-driven solutions tailored to our leaders. The result? Four custom workshops designed specifically for our target audience.
Our leaders gained valuable tips and tricks on how to prepare for and engage in courageous conversations. The practical experience of applying these tips immediately, in a safe environment with professional actors, was the icing on the cake. A successful collaboration that definitely leaves us wanting more!

To build a culture of dialogue, developing strong communication skills is essential. This serves as the foundation for organizations to make conversations work effectively. To support organizations in this effort, we deliberately focus on three powerful levers to foster a thriving culture of dialogue: Psychological Safety, Leadership, and a Feedback Culture. Each of these elements contributes to a culture where conversations drive growth, innovation, and sustainable results.
